Year 1 - The first Earthship Pitaya Festival took place on a full moon the night of February 9th, 2009. The fest was founded by a group of friends over a bon fire at Finca Palermo. Day time activities included a Yoga workshop, a horseshoe tournament and pinata party for the kids in El Carrizal. The Music Schedule consisted of Coquito’s Open Stage, Sam & Mike of the Harlequins from Santa Barbara, Matty Powell, Son de Oriente, and Amalgama from Leon. A video of the beach clean up day with the Carizal kids was shown on the main stage at the end of the night and for most of those children, it was the first and only time they have ever seen a video of themselves. At the time, the Earthship, or Casa Llanta as it is known by the locals, was still lacking windows, doors and flooring however visitors toured the home regardless. The climax of the kids party was the unforgettable giant hot pink pinanta. Marti gras beads, glow in the dark necklaces and feathered boas were plentiful. Our estimate in attendance was between 800 – 1,000 visitors throughout the day and night. Be sure to check out David Kalani’s video of that epic event below.
